WHY CHOOSE FRANKFORT SMILES DENTAL

Dental Crowns in Frankfort

What are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that fits over a damaged tooth, restoring its shape, size, and strength while protecting it from further damage. Crowns are often recommended in cases where a tooth has undergone significant decay or trauma or has been subjected to a root canal.

By placing a crown, you effectively create a protective barrier that not only enhances the tooth’s appearance but also improves its function, allowing you to chew and bite without discomfort. These restorations can be made from various materials, including porcelain, ceramic, metal, or a combination, tailored to suit both aesthetic and functional needs.

Dental Crowns

The Dental Crown Procedure

Your initial consultation and examination include your dentist carefully looking at your tooth or teeth and may involve X-rays. Together, we’ll decide if a crown is best or if there are other options. Sometimes, you might need a root canal first depending on the severity. This check-up helps create a plan just for you and your dentist will explain everything clearly.

The next step would be to prepare your tooth for the crown. This may involve removing any decay and reshaping of the tooth. We’ll make an impression to ensure a perfect fit to maximize comfortability. In some cases, you’ll receive a temporary crown while waiting for the permanent one. This will protect your prepared tooth and keep your smile intact. Be sure to take good care of it to avoid any issues.

When the permanent crown is ready, we’ll remove the temporary crown and check the fit of the new one. If needed, we’ll make any necessary adjustments. Then, we’ll place the permanent crown. The whole process usually takes two to three visits. With good care, your new crown can last for years!

Protection for Teeth

Dental crowns protect teeth by covering them with a durable cap that restores their shape, strength, and function. Made from materials like porcelain, metal, or ceramic, crowns shield damaged, decayed, or weakened teeth from further harm, reducing sensitivity and the risk of breakage. They provide a protective barrier, allowing the tooth to function normally and prevent issues like pain, infection, or shifting.

Multiple Crown Options

Porcelain or ceramic crowns offer a natural appearance and are ideal for front teeth. Metal crowns, often made from gold or silver, are suitable for molars. Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns combine strength and aesthetics. Zirconia crowns are both strong and tooth-colored, providing a balance between durability and appearance. Resin crowns are more affordable but less durable.

Proper Care & Maintenance

Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and flossing carefully around the crown to prevent plaque buildup. Avoid chewing hard foods, ice, or using your teeth as tools, as this can damage the crown. Regular dental check-ups are essential to monitor the crown’s condition and ensure it fits well. If you grind your teeth, you should wear a nightguard.
